The first touristic webcams in Morocco – travel at the time of COVID

2021. január 23. 05:32 - webgarden

After careful preparation, we had the opportunity to install open touristic webcams in Morocco. More exactly in the Rabat Zoo.

The project was assisted throughout by the staff of the Hungarian Embassy in Rabat, to whom we’d like to thank you very much for their help!

We thought, in the time of COVID, it was even more important to install the cameras as soon as possible, as many people must stay at home and can’ get to the zoo nowadays.

The Rabat Zoo is a superb place, where animals are really taken care of.

With the help of SkyDreamCam by WebGarden, the zoo is going to be virtually available not only in Morocco but all around the world. Hopefully, we will be able to encourage tourists, who visit Morocco, to visit this place, once the travel restrictions are lifted. Currently, savannah animals and giraffes can be watched live, but we plan to expand the number of cameras in the future.

The travel itself wasn’t easy, but by following the rules, we didn’t feel at risk along the trip at all.

We started our trip on 15th October 2020 on the Vienna-Amsterdam-Casablanca route.

Before, we took a PCR test, where we had to be careful not to get there too early, nor too late. The travel lasted almost a day and a test not older than 72 hours was requested at the time of entry into Morocco, but boarding in Vienna already required a negative test. The test station promised the result within 24-48 hours. Since we went to Vienna by car, this part of the trip was pretty sharp.

Only a few people were hanging out at the deserted airports, but the planes were relatively loaded due to fewer flights as per the flight restrictions. With these few passengers, however, check-in was slower, as everyone was checked for test results and a few passengers were not allowed to board, as not having any.

The usual car rental company was already waiting for us at the arrivals, and everything was smooth even by the entry, as we had negative PCR tests.

At the hotel, there has been some complication, as, by the time we arrived, we were told by the manager, we’d better book another hotel, as there have been some infected employees at the hotel. We thanked him for his honest and careful advice and moved to another hotel.

The next day we started to install the 5 cameras in the zoo. We didn’t have much to do with the installation, everything was very well-prepared. Thanks to the modern infrastructure of the zoo, we were able to connect the cameras to the switches with cables that were already routed there.

It was a real experience to see the zoo and its inhabitants from a perspective that’s given to very few people. In addition, the pleasant 25 degrees also felt very well in late October.

We spent the rest of our time relaxing, visiting the blue city and relocating our seat to Marrakech.

It is believed that one who hasn’t visited Marrakech hasn't even visited Morocco. We fully agree with this :) The view of the beautiful hotels, the desert, and the Atlas is a must-see.

Heading from Rabat to Marrakech, we had the opportunity to try what it’s like to drive in a real sandstorm, which became even more exciting as the darkness set in.

It was strange to see, what a dead city Jemaa el Fnaa has become. This place used to be always living, there always used to be a crowd and what you can’t buy here probably doesn’t even exist. Now 70% of the shops were closed, barely a few locals loitering, foreigners may have been just us. Luckily, our favorite orange juice vendor was open, from where we could also buy and drink fresh, vitamin-rich orange juice for a few dirhams per liter.

The official opening ceremony took place at the zoo, where Dr. Abdeladim Lhafi (High Commissioner for Water and Forests and the Fight against Desertification and Commissioner General of COP 22) took over the cameras in the presence of the Hungarian Ambassador Miklós Trommler, the Foreign Economic Attaché András Kolozs, the colleagues of the Hungarian Embassy and in the presence of the management of the Rabat Zoo.

We hope to introduce more, useful services and products in the Moroccan and African markets in the near future.

We are proud to be the first to have touristic webcams installed in Morocco, after Ghana, in the same region, which allows thousands of visitors to our clients’ websites who could be potential tourists to arrive every month.

In the frame of our Restart.Travel project we would like to help further tourist attractions, municipalities, hotels, restaurants, national tourism agencies in the after-COVID-recovery, in the revitalization of tourism.

The trip home was a bit adventurous, but we managed to get home with re-routings and adequate stress tolerance. Neither during the trip nor before or after did we get the virus because we paid special attention to the health of both ourselves and our environment.
